THE SCHOOL ENROLLMENT OF CHILDREN IN THE PLANTATION SECTOR IN INDONESIA
ABSTRACT: This paper is aimed
to analyze the determinants of school enrollment of children ages 10-15 in the
plantation sector, Indonesia. The data for the analysis is obtained from the
Susenas conducted by the Indonesian Central Bureau of Statistics. The data covers
20,312 children ages 10-15 in the plantation sector. The analysis is carried
out using the descriptive and logistic regression models and finds that some
variables have significant impacts on the school enrollment of children. The
data shows that the enrollment rate for children ages 10-15 in the plantation
sector is high at 93.7 percent with the participation rate for children ages
10-12 is 98.0 percent and children ages 13-15 is 88.9 percent. Meanwhile, the
logistic regression analysis shows that the status of child labor influences
the most on the educational enrollment of children in the plantation sector.
Children who work have 0,085 times less chance to enroll in education than
children who do not work. This fact shows that the higher level of the household
head education will be followed by the higher level of the children’s
enrollment in education.
