Impact of achievement motivation on academic achievement among midwifery students
Abstract: Motivation is an
important factor in determining academic achievement and the quality of
graduate students. Based on data from the Education For All Global Monitoring
Reportissued by the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural
Organization UNESCO (2012),Indonesia's education is ranked 64th out of 120
countries. This study aims to determine the relationship between achievement
motivation and academic achievement among students in Akbid Bina Husada
Tangerang.
Methods: This study design was cross-sectional design. The population is
all students in Akbid Bina Husada Tangerang. The samples size were 113 students
of the first semester of grade Iobtained by simple random technique. Data were
analyzed using chi square test.
Results: The result is that the percentage of academic performance index
with honour: 41.6%, avery satisfactory:58.4%. Strong motivation percentage of
99.1% and weak motivation of only 9%. The proportion of academic performance
index with honour on the group of students with a strong motivation were high
than weak motivation (57.5%: 0.9%), academic performance index with verysatisfactory
with a strong motivation: 41.6%, otherwise there is no academic performance
index with honors on a group of students with weak motivation. Statistical test
results did not prove there is a relationship between achievement motivation
and student achievement (p = 0.397).
Conclusions: Although it is not shown to be associated statistically, but
the tendency of students with a strong motivation to have a good academic
record higher. Therefore, students' motivation needs to be maintained and
improved both internally and externally in order to obtain academic achievement
as expected.
